Geelong is the second largest city in Victoria after Melbourne the capital. The greater region is home to over 250,000 people making it the 12th largest city in Australia and one of the country's fastest growing cities. Perfectly located for anyone visiting Victoria, the city centre is 74 kilometres south west of Melbourne and is a renowned gateway to the tourist resorts of the Bellarine Peninsula, Surf Coast and Great Ocean Road and is within an hour's drive of Ballarat in the heart of Victoria's goldfields.
The Geelong region boasts some of the best food and wine Australia has to offer, with rich farmlands the region has a diverse range of products, including vegetables, wine, fine beef, lamb and of course seafood. The city is an important Australian wool hub, it has a major port facility and manufacturing centre including Ford, Alcoa, Aerospace Technologies and Shell. Geelong also has major research and development facilities including the CSIRO Animal Health Laboratory, Textile and Fibres Technology Centre, Marine and Freshwater Resource Institute, Deakin University, Ford Motor Company's Asia Pacific and Africa hub for research, engineering and development plus major medical infrastructure with Barwon Health.
Geelong is known for its fabulous events, including the Easter Bells Beach Surfing Classic, The Australian International Airshow, RGYC Australia Day Regatta, The multicultural Pako Festa plus a full calendar of sporting and community events. Geelong is also home to the Cats, Geelong's own AFL Football team one of the most successful in teams the national league's competition.
The region is quiet diverse, there are the quaint bay side townships and rolling farmlands of the Bellarine Peninsula, the bushland and the rugged surf beaches of our coastal towns like Torquay and Anglesea which are the gateway to the Great Ocean Road one of Australia's most scenic drives. To the west is our rural heartland known as the Golden Plains and home to much of the regions farming and agriculture.
The Geelong city centre is vibrant, modern and cosmopolitan with plenty of shopping and beautiful street-scapes, while our magnificent waterfront is our jewel only blocks away from the city centre and home to many of our major attractions, leisure and events.
