The historic carousel is the jewel of our magnificent waterfront, sitting proudly in a modern glass and steel sail shaped pavilion overlooking our glistening harbour. Painstakingly restored the carousel is of the city's most loved attractions by young and old alike.
Not only is this attraction truly special, carousel is a very rare and beautiful Armitage – Herschell Carousel dating back to 1892. It has been fully restored to its former glory and features 36 horses and two decorative chariots. This historic carousel is one of the few left in the world and Geelong's is regarded by many as the finest example still in use anywhere in the world.
24 of the horses are original and took over 300 man hours each to restore, while the other 12 were made using many of the same processes as the original to ensure they are as authentic as possible. Even authentic coach wood was imported from the USA to match the original timbers. The whole project took craftsman over two years to complete after being stored for many years the Victorian gold district town of Castlemaine.
Inside the carousel there are delightful paintings telling the tale of King Arthur and Camelot. The painting forms branches which hold the canopy like a giant tree over the horses below.
The pavilion features a small display showing the restoration process and even includes one of the original horses left unrestored; giving an insight into what poor condition the carousel was in when purchased. It is quite amazing to see the finished product and see what the team of talented craftsmen was able to do in bringing our carousel back to life and intern bringing so much joy for new generations of people for many years to come.
